March writing prompts are here!

My daughter loves the idea of writing, but she often doesn’t know what to write and tires easily. Lately, we have been doing a lot of story prompts using pictures. I find her a picture online. She tells a story about it and I type it up. But, I think she’s ready to start doing a little more writing on her own. Or, at least partly on her own.

These March journal prompts are perfect for budding writers because the prompts lend themselves very well to short writing times.

This month we will write :

  • a letter to a veteran
  • lists of weather, flowers, things that are green, and more!
  • instructions
  • a poem
  • a book summary
  • descriptive sentences
  • and more!

Writing prompts are great for young writers because they often suffer from writer’s block. It can be intimidating to say “write about anything you want!” What?! There are so many things…where do they even begin?

Writing prompts, or journal prompts, narrow the scope of their writing task and make it less overwhelming. This can help relieve a lot of anxiety and encourage even the most reluctant writers to write.

I have included a lot of variety in the writing prompts because, if your young writer is anything like mine, they get bored easily. This is not 25 days of “tell me about your favorite…”. No, ma’am!

March writing prompts sneak peak

This free download includes opportunities to write lists, describe animals and objects, write a letter, learn about dog-sledding, write about a few of their favorite things, and much more! I have also included 25 writing prompts, which is more than the official “school days” in March. This way, if one prompt doesn’t strike their fancy, they can pick something else.

Feel free to go in order or just let your kiddo choose one that strikes their interest that day and cross them off as you go!
