Kids love to play games. In fact, I wrote an entire post about playing games to practice math!
Do your kids get tired of practicing their math facts over and over? Or they get fidgety and agitated? It’s the same in our house, so when Miss T was working on her numbers that add to five, I decided to come up with a game for us!
We have another game, I See 20, that I play with her older sister, but I wanted something just for T. So, Five in the Hive was born!

This is a fun game that helps students work on their mental math when adding to five. There are cards with 0,1,2,3,4, and 5 on them. There are also ‘bear’ cards and ‘swarm’ cards! More on those in a moment!
On their turn, a player flips over one of the cards. They leave it flipped over. As cards are flipped over and players see sets of numbers that add to five, they yell “Five in the Hive!” The first player to yell it out and correctly say the number sentence gets to keep the set.
For example, there might be a 3 and a 2 flipped over and someone could yell “Five in the Hive” and say 3+2=5 and collect the cards.
But, there could also be a 1, a 1, and a 3 flipped over. This could also be “Five in the Hive”. I like that this game breaks children out of the standard thinking of “two numbers that add to five” and really challenges them to focus on their mental math and number sense.
Ok, now back to the special cards since this is where the real fun begins. There are two special cards – Swarm cards and Bear cards.
If a player flips over a Bear card on their turn, they get to steal one set of cards from another player!
If a player flips over a Swarm card on his or her turn, they have to put one of their card sets back into the “hive”. This means flip them back over and mix them back in with the other cards that are still in play.
Using games and activities is a great way to create excitement around learning.My girls love playing this game and don’t even realize how much they are working their math skills!
