Just because your child isn’t working on shapes and counting anymore in math doesn’t mean that it has to stop being fun!
Today I am sharing a FREE 2-digit addition maze with you!
Why a Math Maze?
My oldest daughter is now in second grade. She has always loved school, loved learning, was an early writer, etc. But, for some reason, this year has seen a lot of resistance to learning. Whether it’s that she just wants to play and not do formal schoolwork or she complains that there is too much to do in second grade….just different forms of resistance and complaining.
There is definitely a part of me that just wants to say “stop whining and let’s just do it!”, right?! I mean, I can’t be the only homeschool mom that has those thoughts!
But, there is this other, shall well say more mature, part of me that recognizes these moments of resistance as a sign that she needs to encounter the material in a different form.
Basically, she needs it to be fun again. Research shows that when children stop having fun while learning, they often stop learning, as well.
Well, I certainly didn’t want that to happen! So, I decided to come up with some simple ways to bring the fun back into our math lessons. It boils down to mostly gameschooling and fun activities. And my daughter just thinks mazes are so fun!
Ready to grab the maze??? You can sign up at the bottom of this post to join my email list. All of my subscribers get access to my Homeschooling Resources Library full of freebies and resources to help make your homeschooling fun and simple. You will get an email right away with the password to the library and you can access the maze there, under “math”.
No More Math Problems
Since I’ve started putting mazes in front of my daughter, math is a breeze. She just does it. One study shows that when students have fun while learning they are more likely to stay curious about the topic and come back for more. So, fun math activities it is!
I was listening to the Brave Writer podcast the other day and Julie’s guest speaker was talking about how girls and boys actually have almost identical math abilities in elementary school, but girls tend to have much higher verbal abilities, so they gravitate towards those subjects because they are easier. And thus begins the “I’m not good at math” that we hear so many girls and young women (and homeschool moms, ahem) say.
Well, as an engineer I have a strong urge to ensure all my daughters have a strong math foundation. So, I’ve definitely made it my mission to make sure my girls get daily practice in math, so they can become confident and not inadvertently shut any future doors.
Pirate Treasure!
In this fun addition maze for early elementary, your child solves two-digit addition problems that do not involve carrying. They solve a problem, then color in the path that contains the correct answer. This will lead them to another addition problem and they solve that one, color in the path, and so on until they reach the treasure!
I hope your young learner loves this maze as much as mine did! If you are looking for more mazes, you can purchase a 3-pack of additional mazes in my shop.
