I haven’t met a young child yet that doesn’t love to play Go Fish!, so I thought why not make it into a fun reading game?!
This printable sight word game is a great way to encourage the memorization of beginning sight words. This version of the game includes the Fry first 100 words.
My middle pumpkin is learning to read and she wants to read soooo badly, but she also gets bored with worksheets. I mean, what kindergartner doesn’t, right? So, I’ve been coming up with lots of activities for her and this is my latest.
This sight word game is played just like the regular version of Go Fish!, but instead of numbers on the cards, there are words. Beginning sight words.
The download is just white, but I chose to print it out on colored cardstock to jazz it up a little bit. My girls loved the bright colors! You could also laminate the cards if you think they will be getting some rough love.
How to Play Sight Words Go Fish
Shuffle the cards. Deal each player seven cards. Place the rest of the cards in the middle face down (This is “the pond”, so spread them around.)
Decide who goes first.
On their turn, each player asks one other player if they have a word they are looking for. If the player has it, he or she must give it to the player who asked. If they don’t have the card they say “go fish” and the player chooses a card from the pond. If the player chooses the card he or she asked for, they get to go again. Otherwise, it is the next player’s turn.
As players get matches, they lay them face up in front of them. If a player runs out of cards during the game, they may pick two new cards from the pond to keep playing.
Play continues clockwise until all the cards are matched. The player with the most matches wins!
A Few Suggestions
I chose to print mine on different colored cardstock just to brighten it up and make it more ‘fun’. My girls love color, so they loved the bright colored cards. But, white cardstock or just one single color works just as well.
You may also choose to not use then entire deck at first. When I was first using this game with my daughter, we started with the words she was most familiar with plus a couple of words she was just learning. This lets her practice her words without getting frustrated because she can’t read half the words yet. We just added in more cards as she learned new words.
