One of my most vivid memories from school is saying the Pledge of Allegiance every morning before the morning announcements. While we homeschool for a lot of reasons, I still want my children to have some of the traditional school experiences that I remember. Knowing and saying the Pledge of Allegiance is one of them.

What is the Pledge of Allegiance?

The Pledge of Allegiance is a short expression of allegiance that most school children say around the United States. It’s main purpose is to instill a sense of patriotism in students. I think it is very imortant to instill patriotism and honor for our country in our children.

The History of the Pledge of Allegiance

According to UShistory.org, the Pledge of Allegiance was originally written in 1892 by a socialist minister named Francis Bellamy.

The original pledge of allegiance text was not specific to any country and went like this:

“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

“The flag of the United States of America” was added in 1923 and in 1954 “under God” was added at President Einsenhower’s direction. President Eisenhower had “under God” added to combat the Community threat posed by the Cold War.

Today, the Pledge of Allegiance reads like this:

I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the republic, under God
one nation
with liberty and justice
for all.

Bellamy orignially envisioned the pledge would be accompanied by a salute where the person saying the pledge would extent the arm straight upwards towards to the flag. Apparently people originally said the pledge with this gesture, but it was dropped in WWII because it too closely resembled the Nazi salute.

Today, the traditional saying of the pledge has the person recite the text with their right hand over their heart.

Should We Still be Saying the Pledge of Allegiance?

I say Yes! I love my country, and while I do not love the division and hatred that is so common as of late, the Pledge of Allegiance reminds me of the high standard that we should hold ourselves to as Americans.

Some people say that the origins of the Pledge of Allegiance come from a mind set of anti-immigration and white nationalism. And, while that may be true since the time period in which it was written was a time of massive immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe, where skin tones, lifestyles, and religions didn’t necessarily match what was prevalent in the US at that time.

But! I think the words of the Pledge of Allegiance are amazing and exactly what I want for my country. Anything can be twisted to be discrimanatory, but it can also be taken at face value and used as a very high standard for “liberty and justice for all.” Isn’t that what we all want?!
