We recently moved to a location where poison ivy is very prevalent.  My little girls get bug bites and poison ivy like they are going out of style, so I wasn’t surprised when they both had a rash show up after a few weeks in our new locale.  We had always used typical over the counter medications for it, but sometimes the alcohol ones would sting and it seemed like the area still itched after an application.  So, this time I decided to try a homemade remedy  of apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, roman chamomile oil, peppermint oil, lavender oil, and water instead.

The first time I put the concoction on my daughter’s arm she said it stung, but she had just been scratching it and I think it was open a little bit, so I am sure the apple cider vinegar stung! Be sure if you use this on your kiddos that you make sure they haven’t been recently scratching.  So, I wiped it off, told her we would wait a little bit, and try it again.  A few hours passed and we tried it again. If stinging is an issue, try this.

Stop The Itch From Poison Ivy

I dipped a cotton ball in the liquid and dabbed it on.  We put it on again before bedtime as a precaution, but she hadn’t been complaining about any itching.  And she didn’t the next day, either!  This stuff got rid of the itch in one day!  With one application!  Seriously, you’ve got to try it; it’s awesome.

Want to try it?  Here’s how:

Poison Ivy Itch Reliever

2 Tbsp water

2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar (with “the mother’)

3 drops tea tree essential oil

3 drops roman chamomile essential oil

3 drops lavender essential oil

3 drops peppermint essential oil

dash of kosher salt

Directions:  Mix all ingredients together, making sure the salt dissolves.  Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply to the affected area as needed.  Mixture can be stored in the fridge for a few days.  I stored it in a glass baby bottle, so then I could just shake it up whenever I needed it next.

Need something natural and effective for travelling? This works amazing well!

I hope this helps next time your family gets a spot of this nasty rash.  If you tried it, I would love to hear about your experience in the comments below.  Do you have another go to home remedy for itchy rashes?  I’d love to hear that, too!

  1. OOOMMMGGGG! Poison Oak attacked me while picking blackberries and I’m allergic to Poison Oak! My crazy itchy rash progressed into blisters that created more itchy bumps and the prescription ointment just wasn’t taking away the itch. I tried straight apple cider vinegar which helped short term. I’m soooo thrilled I found your recipe on Pinterest! I doubled the recipe, and used my mortar and pestle to grind up the kosher salt. I did not have any roman chamomile on hand so I substituted with eucalyptus. I’m sure having the tea tree oil was enough but I was desperate.

Not only did this amazing ointment stop my itching, but it left me with a soothing, calming and refreshing sensation.

Thank you soooo much for sharing!

  2. Just tried this today. Rash is on my jawline, chin, eyelids, cheeks and a couple spots on my hand and hip. It definitely stung a little and was itchy until it dried. Then it started to feel a lot better. After about an hour and a half i still feel a cooling sensation and the redness is gone. It feels SO much better!!!! Can’t wait to see what happens over night. I will put more on at bedtime so I can hopefully sleep!!! Thank you for posting this remedy!!!

  3. I used everything except the chamomile because I didn’t have it on hand. It burned and caused the itch to intensify probably because I had been scratching and rubbing the rash. So I pulled out my hair dryer and turned it on high heat and blasted the rash. I’ve done this before and the heat is like scratching without scratching, totally helps me. This remedy has helped with the itching so much!! Thank you for sharing it, I pinned it and will use it every time!!
